Chinese Culture In The Business World

Chinese culture is one of the oldest cultures in the world. The Chinese business culture is much different than that of the West. In the business world, the Chinese take the social approach more so than that of the strictly business approach. The Chinese prefer to do business with those they determine as a friend. Therefore, word of mouth, a verbal recommendation is more likely to open the doors to future business contacts than the more traditional methods used today in the US such as cold calls.

The Chinese place much importance on seniority. When you address someone in the business world, you address them according to their title such as Chairman last name, rather than Mr. last name. A dinner or lunch is usually held before any business talks will begin. The host pays for the check. It is impolite to offer to pay or split the check.
