The Heightened Senses of Cats

Cats have excellent vision, both during the day and at night. This is due to the fact that their eyes have a ‘tapetum lucidum’, a layer of tissue that reflects light, increasing the cat’s sensitivity to dim light. This ability allows cats to hunt well at night. House cats, however, have fairly poor color vision, thus if you are a cat lover, you may notice your cat knocking objects over in your house..

Cats also have great hearing and are able to detect various frequencies. They can hear ultrasonic sound, which also helps them hunt since rodents make high-pitched sound to one another.

Because of their advanced olfactory bulb, cats can smell amazingly well. Plants that contain nepetalactone, like catnip, attract cats due to their ability to smell one part per billion of it.

Compared to humans, cats have a low amount of taste buds, including those that taste sweetness. Cats do, however, respond highly to the taste of amino acids.
